Excerpt from Technology and Digital Media in the Early Years: Tools for Teaching and Learning

Teachers are increasingly seeing technology as another tool for their classrooms. As they explore strategies and reflect on their students’ responses they see the value in these experiences. A book is an amazing tool to invite children to become immersed in a story. When I was teaching preschool, I remember the expressions of anticipation when I would finish reading a chapter in the Magic Treehouse series. An iPad, projected on a screen can be a tool to extend enthusiastic read-alouds. Children can reach out and connect with authors via video-conferencing tools. iPads also invite opportunities to engage with and enjoy children’s literature in another way. When children are familiar with a particular story, they can experience the same story through enhanced e-books and they can see the characters they know and love come to life.
