The Digital Play Framework: Connecting technology, young children, and educators through play-based experiences

Presenters: Tamara Kaldor, Leanne Beaudoin-Ryan, Erikson Institute; Susan Edwards, Learning Sciences Institute Australian Catholic University; Kathleen Paciga, Columbia College Chicago

Kaldor, Paciga, and featured colleagues will lead a discussion on the Digital Play Framework at NAEYC PLI. The Digital Play Framework serves as a paradigm of behaviors or indicators of how children learn to use technology through play experiences.

To learn more about the Digital Play Framework take a look at Jo Bird’s, researcher on technology in early childhood, guest blog post as well as an observation tool for assessing the interaction of behaviors, play, and technology.


An Emerging Role for Educators in the 21st Century: Media Mentorship as an Essential Aspect of Family Engagement

Presenter: Chip Donohue, Erikson Institute

Donohue, PhD, will explore the role that educators and adults play in implementing technology practices. His focus is on how professionals can improve communication, strengthen the home-school connection, and enhance parent involvement/family engagement. This sessions stems from the discussion of media mentors in Donohue’s newest publication, Family Engagement in the Digital Age: Early Childhood Educators as Media Mentors. 


The “T” and “M” in STEM

Presenters: Jie-Qi Chen and Tamara Kaldor, Erikson Institute

Kaldor and Chen, PhD, have collaborated together to offer a hands on approach in understanding the intersection of both the “T” and “M” in STEM. Kaldor’s background in technology and Chen’s work with the Early Math Collaborative will showcase how to appropriately use tech with children in early math and numeracy.


Final Report of the Study on Technology and Interactive Media for Young Children

Presenters: Katie Paciga, Columbia College Chicago; Chip Donohue, Erikson Institute; Rick Fernandes, Fred Rogers Center

As a research fellow to the TEC Center and in collaboration with Fernandes and Donohue, Paciga’s research with the Fred Rogers Center sought to identify and describe innovative and evidence-based uses of technology and digital media, specifically in positive social and emotional development in young children, ages birth to 8.
