A common assumption we hear from educators is that little is known about the technologies for young children today. While we have decades of research on television use, the technologies and how young children use these technologies have changed quickly and drastically. Children are now able to create and make with technology in ways we could not have predicted. At home, a child can create their own digital books featuring a voice recording from a family member far away and add pictures of themselves, represented as the main character in their story. In school, students can take a picture of their block castle and share their mathematical and engineering learning with their parents. Tomorrow, they can pull up the picture of their block castle and make it even more complex and incorporate into a digital portfolio.
There are many aspects of technology and digital media that remain to be less explored. However, many researchers across the globe are working diligently to add to this body of research so that parents and educators make the most informed decisions about technology and digital media use with young children. In order to support and inform the implementation of technology with young children, TEC Center has compiled a list of 10 Reports which highlight recent research findings of various aspects of young children’s technology use. These 10 Reports inform the work of educators and early childhood professionals.
